IPEA

LULUCF model

IPEA, which is a Brazilian governmental institution, started to develop land use models in 2007-2008. The IPEA model is an economic, profit maximisation model. In their first exercise they looked at how farmers would react to climate change, based on climate models. Current focus is on Brazil, trying to understand competition between sugarcane expansion and food production.

 

In the context of the CLIMACAP project, it is anticipated that IPEA, with the support of COPPE and other national teams will improve the Brazilian model through disaggregation (energy crops, food crops, other crops) and develop LULUCF models for Argentina, Colombia and Mexico.
